Shakespeare for All:

Shakespeare for All currently takes place in four Central Valley communities, anchored at their local library. The communities of Salida, Madera, Chowchilla and Modesto have performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and are now preparing to take on Julius Caesar.

Shakespeare for All is introduced to each community via several outreach events. These events serve as arts engagement opportunities, build excitement about the performing arts and identify those who would like to be more deeply involved. Events have ranged from performing a “pop-up Shakespeare” scene at the high school football game to attending a Rotary Club meeting to hanging out at the local diner. These events allow individuals to become comfortable with the idea of art being all around them, relevant to and part of their everyday lives, and not in a theater in a far off city.

This program also demonstrates the value of having professional artists work alongside amateurs. We are performing with, not for, the community. The community comes together not just to see a play, but to play together. Shakespeare’s work is a treasure trove of human experiences to be mined and shared and each person brings something to this invaluable exploration. The Bard’s plays hold universal appeal, are timeless and allow us to interact with powerful truths that the routine of daily life may prevent us from exploring.
