Shakespeare On Tour's
"Hamlet"!

This ghostly tale of a prince whose royal family is disrupted by political events is considered to be one of Shakespeare's finest commentaries on morality and the human condition. Unsurpassed for its unique insights into human nature as well as its powerful dramatic elements, the play is set in the medieval court of Denmark, during the historical period of the events on which it’s based. Trapped together during a cold Denmark winter in a dark, drafty castle, the complexities of their characters set the stage for drama and intrigue.

Those who are new to Shakespeare often find this ghostly mystery to be one of his most satisfying plays. Audiences are delighted to find they recognize many phrases from the witty speeches and probing dialogues, such as Shakespeare's most famous soliloquy, "to be or not to be". The universal dilemmas experienced by Hamlet continue to resonate with today's audiences.

As always, the cast will field questions from the audience at the end of the show and a 3-week curriculum guide (indexed to state standards) is sent in advance of the performance. The engaging and enriching materials have been developed by the show’s director Rebecca J. Ennals, a former Teaching Artist in Residence with the California school system.

An optional one-hour PLAYSHOP for students who want to dig deeper into Hamlet. as well as have some hands-on experience is also available (immediately before or after your show).

Rebecca J. Ennals, renown for her ability to make Shakespeare's plays accessible to audiences of all levels, returns to direct. She also directed last season's popular production of Romeo & Juliet, as well as our prior touring productions of Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The set design (hand-painted by award winning designer Serina Serjama whose work with Santa Barbara and San Jose Opera companies has been widely acclaimed) evokes Elsinore, the castle of the royal family that Hamlet is set in. The period costumes feature rich brocades and designs of that era. Composer Bill Walker, who has worked with Shakespeare on Tour for the past four seasons, has created an enthralling sound track that underscores and punctuates the action and emotion on stage. The production includes a professionally choreographed sword fight by certified Fight Director Carla Pantoja. The talented ensemble (playing the following roles: Hamlet, Ophelia/Horatio, Claudius/Ghost, Gertrude/Marcellus, Polonius/Laertes) has been cast not only for their acting skills but also for their ability to deliver Shakespeare's language in a clear and articulate fashion.

This is the first time Shakespeare on Tour will stage a beginning-to-end production of Hamlet (Digging Hamlet, presented in the fall of 2000, presented selected scenes only). As usual, the script will be edited for length, removing the subplot of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, but many of the most famous speeches will be included.

About Shakespeare on Tour

For over a decade, Shakespeare On Tour has traveled across the state bringing a fifty-five minute version of a Shakespeare play to thousands of students. Each fall and spring our touring troupe of actors arrive at hundreds of venues, bringing sets, props, costumes, and music to enliven their performance. The production is professionally directed and suitable for elementary students through adults. The tour visits more schools than any other theater group in the state; this year alone, the tour will present more than 200 performances to over 20,000 children!

Schools also receive a curriculum guide written by professional educators, with lesson plans designed to help teachers prepare their students to more fully appreciate the performance.
