Free Shakespeare in the Park is performed at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park, off John F. Shelley Drive. The amphitheater is a short walk into the park and isn’t visible from the street or the parking lot.

Public Transportation

McLaren Park is served by public transportation. BART and MUNI both have nearby stops. A bus is required to arrive closest to the amphitheater.
We recommend using Google Maps or to plan the best route for you.

Access and seating

Performance Time

  • 2022 performances begin at 2:00 pm and are approximately 90 minutes long. There is no intermission.


  • The park is open all day long.
  • Seating is first come, first served. Setting out placeholders like blankets, ground cover, coolers, or chairs is allowed. They may be removed if the items are unattended when the show begins.
  • Aisles and walkways for actors will be marked. These spaces must be kept clear at all times.

General Seating

  • The amphitheater contains wooden bleachers for seating as well as a sloped lawn area.
  • All shows are free to the public. No tickets or reservations are required. All seating is general.
  • If you arrive late, take care not to walk in front of the stage and be prepared to sit where you can find space.
  • All unattended personal items, including bags, blankets, and ground covers may be removed when the show begins.
  • To ensure visibility for all patrons, umbrellas, tents and large shade structures are not allowed.
  • The space is accessible for wheelchairs users. There are paved paths in the park.

What To Bring

  • A performance at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater can be warm. We recommend sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Check the weather report before heading out.
  • To ensure visibility for all patrons, tents, umbrellas, tall or large tables, and shade structures are not permitted.
  • Strollers are allowed, provided they are folded down during the performance and not blocking walkways or in the aisles.

Services for Senior and Handicapped Patrons


A limited number of handicapped permit parking spaces are available in the parking lot off John F. Shelley Drive. They are a short distance from the amphitheater.


  • There is limited designated ADA seating and we are happy to accommodate patrons to the best of our ability. If you get to the park and need assistance, please see the Hospitality Manager.
